        For over 10,000 years the native people of Washington have successfully managed their environment and sustained themselves on the rich bounty of the region - harvesting fish and mammals from the sea and rivers, shellfish from the shores, and game and fruit from the land.

        History reveals that these were sophisticated societies based on levels of rank and privilege, worldly commerce, ceremonial pageantry, and fine art - where man and nature were kindred in spirit. They taught respect for the physical world, and had reverence for the spiritual.
